The Hiv Pandemic Is Still Growing

Before the 1970s, nobody had heard of Hiv or Aids, but by 1980 the virus had spread to five continents and Hiv became a global catastrophe affecting hundreds of thousands of individuals. Since then, the Hiv pandemic has become one of the biggest threats to mankind's health in history.

Is Hiv still an active pandemic? Whilst the amount of new Hiv infections is falling and there is evidence the epidemic is slowing down, there were still 2.6 million new cases of the virus reported in 2009 and the amount of population living with the virus was estimated to be 33.3 million.

But although the figures do show a decline in new cases, Hiv continues to be very much a global issue and cases of the virus are still occurring on every continent. However, some parts of the world are far more affected by the Hiv pandemic than others and Hiv in Africa continues to be a major problem. Around 70% of all new cases of Hiv in Africa occur in the sub-Saharan region and in some countries as many as one in five adults are infected, although the rate of infection is falling.

By contrast, cases of Hiv in Eastern Europe and Hiv in Asia are on the rise. in the middle of 2001 and 2009, the amount of population living with Hiv in Eastern Europe and Asia increased by a weighty 54.9%, a trend caused in part by persisting discrimination against homosexuals and drug users.

Transmission rates of Hiv in Europe and Hiv in the Americas are still a question and statistics show that there are currently over a million population living with Hiv in America alone. More seriously, the amount of recorded cases of Hiv in Latin America was recorded as two million in 2008, largely as a succeed of poverty, migration, homophobia and Hiv-discrimination.

But despite the fact that a Hiv pandemic is still very much in evidence, ample advance is being made in the field of Hiv and Aids research and the amount of new cases is down by approximately 20% since the peak of the epidemic in 1999. However there is still a great deal more work to do in the fight against Hiv and Aids, and with more than two million adults still dying every year from Aids related illnesses, campaigners are calling for a greater amount of funding to be made ready in order to provide a more efficient response to the Hiv pandemic.
